McLaren Racing Blames Competitors for Piastri-Norris Collision

Wheel flies off racing car after collision between Norris and Piastri

A racing wheel comes loose from the McLaren of Norris after he made contact with team-mate Oscar Piastri at the beginning of the US GP sprint race.

McLaren Formula 1 leaders Brown and Andrea Stella blamed opposing racers for the crash between Piastri and Lando Norris at the start of the United States Grand Prix sprint event.

Piastri, leading his teammate in the standings by 22 points, made contact with his team-mate after hitting Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg.

The collision forced out both McLaren drivers from the race, along with Aston Martin's Alonso, who was on the inner side of the Sauber driver.

McLaren Leaders Voice Frustration Over Crash

Brown, McLaren Racing's CEO, stated to Sky Sports that some of the driving at the start was "inexperienced", adding: "Obviously Nico made contact with Piastri and he had no reason being where he was."

The team team principal Andrea Stella stated: "The reaction is that we are displeased that we were denied the opportunity to race."

"It is unexpected that some racers with a lot of experience fail to act with justful prudence. Go to the initial turn, ensure you don't damage other drivers and continue."

The team clarified that the team principal was pointing to both Hulkenberg and the Aston Martin driver.

Differing Perspectives on the Incident

Nevertheless, former champion Hill, providing analysis for a sports broadcast, said he believed Piastri had not demonstrated enough awareness of the risks of the first corner of an Formula 1 event when he chose to move inside to try to pass Norris.

Piastri had a better start than Norris and initially challenged on the outer side on the uphill approach to the corner.

However he then cut back in an effort to get a advantage on his teammate on the exit, only to collide with Hulkenberg.

Driver Reactions After the Collision

The McLaren driver said: "Less than perfect but I haven't seen what occurred, I attempted to cut back on Lando and we were both quite distant from the corner apex and then were struck and it sent me into Norris. Unfortunate."

Norris commented: "I just was struck, right? I did nothing wrong. Further back events unfolded and I just got unlucky and got hit because of it. I am unsure. I need to review a bit more carefully. It's more people further back just being a bit reckless and we are the consequence of that."

Alonso said: "At one point I thought I was in the right place on the inside, but some vehicles came very quickly from the outer side changing direction and then I was there in the center."

The Sauber driver, who had qualified a best qualifying fourth place, said: "Big frustrations. All the good work from the previous day in the trash. Just messy."

"Oscar turned in pretty forcefully trying to get the inside line and exit of the first corner but I can't just disappear."

"I had Fernando challenge on the inside and I couldn't see him any more. I wanted to leave space for him and then Oscar steered inward and the collision was inevitable."

Aftermath and McLaren's Reaction

McLaren will analyze the incident with their drivers but not until the race weekend. Both vehicles needed extensive work before qualifying session at 10 PM BST on Saturday.

The team principal said: "In general displeased but we accept it, we are now concentrating on fixing the vehicles, there is a lot to do and then we will resume the event from there."

"We are in a competitive place from our competitiveness point of view so I hope we have the opportunity to race, race normally and utilize our capabilities."

"Championship points are the most important thing, I don't want to talk about bad intentions, just caution. A bit more prudence would be good for all involved."

Championship Implications

The sprint event was won by Red Bull's Verstappen, who closed in on both team racers in the championship - he is now fifty-five points behind the Australian and thirty-three adrift of Norris.

The team boss said: "The consequence is what the maths show - we missed out on eight championship points with both drivers, but we focus on ourselves. We have a highly capable vehicle and two skilled racers. We look forward to just some normal racing."

Verstappen said he was approaching the title race one event at a time.
