LA Dodgers Hold On in Toronto to Set Up Winner-Take-All Game 7 in World Series

The World Series is headed to a decisive seventh game after the Los Angeles Dodgers kept alive their title defense dreams intact on Friday with a three to one win over the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 6.

The defending champions halted Toronto’s late-game comeback with a dramatic final twin killing, stunning a home audience that had come ready to cheer the team's championship in 32 years.

Sixth Game Recap

The Dodgers generated all of their scoring in the third frame. With two away, Ohtani was purposely passed before Will Smith hit a two-bagger to left to score Edman. Freeman earned a base on balls to load the bases, and Mookie Betts delivered with a two-run single to left, handing the Dodgers a 3–0 lead.

Betts’ hit broke a postseason slump and revived the defending champions’ aspirations of becoming the initial back-to-back World Series victors since the Yankees won three straight from 1998 through 2000.

Mound Duel

Gausman had been dominant to that stage, striking out half a dozen of the initial seven batters he faced. He fanned 8 through three innings, matching a World Series record, but the third-inning barrage proved costly. The Blue Jays' star ended with 8 Ks over six innings, yielding three earned runs on three hits and two walks.

Yamamoto, meanwhile, was solid again under pressure. The righty outdueled his counterpart for the second occasion in a seven days, allowing a single run on five base hits over six frames with six strikeouts. He improved to four wins and one loss this postseason with a 1.56 ERA.

The lone score against him came on George Springer two-out single in the third inning, scoring Barger, who had hit a double previously in the frame. Springer’s hit offered a brief spark in his comeback to the starting nine after missing two games with an oblique injury.

Relief Heroics

From there, the Los Angeles relievers carried the load. Rookie Wrobleski got out of a tight spot in the seventh, and fellow rookie Sasaki pitched into the ninth before plunking Alejandro Kirk to open the frame. Addison Barger followed with a double that got stuck under the outfield wall, forcing runners to stay at second and third.

Tyler Glasnow, Los Angeles’ Game 3 starter, entered in relief and got a pop fly before Andrés Giménez hit a line drive to left field. Hernández made the catch and fired to second base to double off Barger, sealing the victory and giving the pitcher his first-ever successful save.

Next Up: Seventh Game

The series now comes down to one game. Max Scherzer will take the mound for the Blue Jays, becoming the sole active hurler to pitch in multiple World Series Game 7s after doing so in 2019 with the Nationals. The veteran signed a one-year deal to pursue one more title and has been a outspoken presence throughout this postseason.

The Los Angeles squad, aiming to be baseball’s first back-to-back title winners in nearly a quarter-century, are projected to lean on Shohei Ohtani for a short outing.
