The daughter of ex- South African Leader Jacob Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terror accusations at the beginning of her court case in the coastal city of Durban city.

The defendant, 43, is being prosecuted over remarks she published on online platforms in the past during violent protests in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the apprehension of her dad.

A period of disorder in several parts of the country in the summer of 2021, including looting and fire-setting, caused at least 300 deceased and led to damage worth an approximate $2.8 billion (£2.2 billion).

Zuma-Sambudla has been charged of fuelling this violence and confronts charges of incitement to commit terrorism and civil unrest.

Context of the Proceedings

The unrest were centered in the provinces of Gauteng and KZN and followed the previous president's arrest for ignoring a legal directive to testify at an inquiry into allegations of graft while he was holding office.

She has consistently refuted the charges against her, with her legal representative previously calling the government's case as weak.

She has also frequently said the accusations against her were an effort to resolve political scores with her parent after he established his own political organization and competed against the African National Congress.

Backing and Case Arguments

This was reinforced by the foundation, which said the proceedings was an "abuse of power" and a "organized effort" of "political and kinship targeting" against the previous head of state and his kin.

A few of followers from her group, the political party, turned up outside the provincial high court, while her parent and other party leaders attended the proceedings inside.

The defense has argued that the evidence presented by prosecutors is inadequate and fails to provide substantial evidence for a conviction.

Central Elements of the Legal Proceedings

  • Online posts from 2019 form the basis of the government's case
  • Violent protests in 2021 resulted in major deaths and economic damage
  • The defendant faces multiple charges of encouragement to violence
  • Judicial proceedings are projected to carry on for multiple days

The trial continues as the prosecution and defense present their evidence before the judicial authority in what is projected to be a carefully observed legal battle with significant politically charged consequences for South Africa.
