Alexander Zverev Battles Auger-Aliassime in Season-Ending Championships Showdown

Overview

The occupational hazards of round-robin tennis typically lead to during this phase of the ATP Finals viewers are commonly scratching our heads, scrambling about for a mathematical tool and trying to work out the brain-busting permutations of qualification. Yet this evening's contest between Zverev and Felix Auger-Aliassime, thankfully, is simple. It's a direct elimination: the victor secures a semi-final contest against Carlos Alcaraz at this championship finale; the loser heads out.

Zverev is the predicted winner for this: the elite athlete is the more experienced competitor, has previously won at this event twice before and leads their head-to-head with six victories against three defeats, having won both the games they've played on an indoor hard court.

Yet … this type of playing field on which Felix has secured the bulk of his trophies, he is in great form after his compelling comeback against Shelton on Wednesday and he defeated the German in the US Open third round in August. Furthermore, the court pace is quicker in the host city than at Flushing Meadows, which works even more in the Canadian's favor.

If the German player is reserved, as he did against Sinner, and Auger-Aliassime takes it to the German with his powerful serves and fearless play, it might very well be the 25-year-old Canadian – the one-time phenom who was earlier slated in front of Alcaraz and Sinner to take over from the tennis icons – who earns the dubious honour of competing with the top-ranked player tomorrow.

Action commences: at about 8.30pm local time, 7:30 PM in the UK.
